Music on the Streets- DJ Karyzma

Courtenay grew up in a musically charged environment, which [he says] greatly influenced his decision to become a disc jock. He moved from Glendale in Kingston, to Portmore, St. Catherine at eight years old, and being the youngest of three boys, Courtenay looked up to his brothers, who were avid music lovers. “My brothers were always downloading music and making CDs for friends and this sparked my interests,” Courtenay shares. Now at age 22, this Gemini juggles his career in music entertainment along with his studies in business administration at the University of Technology (UTech).

It was at UTech in February 2007 that his career heightened and Courtenay took it to the frontline. However, DJ Karyzma as he is popularly known is hopeful to successfully complete his business administration degree. Before UTech, Courtenay attended the Wolmers Boys School which he began in 1999 after passing examinations at the Vaz Preparatory. Here, his interest in music grew further, and he started to focus on the art of being a disc jockey. “I started listening to Kurt Riley and I was amazed at his style of juggling, his selections, and how he incorporated sound effects,” stated Karyzma. He then decided that this was what he loved and wanted to do.

Like any good student, he did his homework and learned the craft on his own by downloading ‘deejay’ software from the internet. He began mixing in second form, and worked on honing his skills for approximately seven years, before joining 876radio.com. Karyzma exudes his astrological traits of always being energetic, involved and charismatic which is one of his signature traits and sets him apart from the pack. He demonstrated all this on 876radio.com and soon after, became a regular ‘mixer’, selector and administrator on the site.

DJ Karyzma’s Journey

Cide, the CEO of Darkcide International was impressed with Karyzma’s skills and character, and suggested that he join the sound system, Darkcide. He was placed as equal shareholder in the company in 2007, and played a managerial role for two years. Recognition for the name DJ Karyzma increased significantly as he took on the position of head disc jock for the group. In June 2009, he decided to branch out on his own as the environment was no longer conducive to his goals and objectives.

While he currently seeks the full support of his family when it comes to his current love, his support by the public has grown over the past two years having left the group and making his debut at UTech. The young disc jock has since played on the major party scenes such as Appleton Temptation Isle (ATI) in Negril, Rhythm & Booze, Karma, Altitude, Solstice, Rumfest, Taboo, Impy Skimpy, Mingles in Ocho Rios among other events. He has also captured the attention of club owners and has played at Jamaica’s hot spots such as Asylum, Fiction, Pure | Plush Club & Lounge, The Quad and Margaritaville in Ocho Rios. Now, he is the Resident DJ for Secret Wednesdays at Pure | Plush Club & Lounge and is also a part of the line-up for the club on Saturdays. As of July 27th he has added touring with dancehall artistes to hius musical experience; DJ Karyzma was invited on a three day tour in Trinidad with veteran Dancehall artiste, Beenie Man where he worked as his disc jock.

With a philosophy [on life] such as “nothing lasts forever and nothing is too big to be achieved”, DJ Karyzma continues his musical journey as the creator of Karyzma Music Group. At a time when the order of the day is seemingly “every man for himself,” the DJ invited close friends, Dwayne Scott also known as DJ Cyrus and Joel Harrison as Kruddy to take their careers to another level as members of the group. DJ Karyzma has his eyes set on providing quality entertainment while leaving a lasting impression on the music industry. With the willpower, ardor, talent and sheer drive to succeed, there is little doubt in his mind that he will achieve this. “I see myself touring the world and becoming an established act, mixing in Dubai one day and hopefully obtaining a position as a radio disc jock,” assures Karyzma.
